If you’re interested in buying a compact truck, there are loads of excellent options. As one of the leading reviewers and experts, Consumer Reports’ rankings are highly-regarded. Both Ford models managed to crack the top three for the compact pickup segment. In a crowded class of vehicles, how did the automaker get two models where others don’t have one? Here’s why the Ford Ranger and Ford Maverick compact trucks both cracked Consumer Reports‘ top three.
Consumer Reports’ top 3 compact trucks
Consumer Reports‘ top three compact trucks are the 2022 Honda Ridgeline, 2022 Ford Maverick, and 2022 Ford Ranger. Honda’s offering is a bit ahead of the curve, but only these three models are recommended by CR. That means Ford has two models beating out the likes of truck experts and industry titans like Chevy, Toyota, and Nissan.
For CR’s overall ratings, the Ridgeline received an 82 out of 100. However, the Ford Maverick isn’t far behind, with an overall rating of 74, a bit higher than its Ranger sibling, which scored 62. Moreover, those scores are far apart, but other models are much further behind. For example, the last place model on CR’s list is one of the most popular. For 2022, the Jeep Gladiator is ranked dead last, with a 38 out of 100 overall score.
Why did both Ford compact trucks make the top 3?
Firstly, the brand new model, the Maverick, came in second place. There’s a lot to like about the new truck, such as its excellent fuel economy as a standard hybrid pickup. However, CR highlighted other fantastic items about the Maverick. For example, a competent ride and handling, maneuverability, visibility, access, and controls are all positives.
On the other hand, the Ford Ranger was around for a while, left, then came back. Why is it the third-best compact truck of 2022? On top of having excellent predicted reliability, CR enjoys the truck’s size and how maneuverable it is. Additionally, fuel economy is excellent for a truck of its size and class. After all, it is a little bigger than the Maverick, which is attempting to take over.
Other compact pickup trucks fall short
Other trucks Consumer Reports reviewed include the Jeep Gladiator, GMC Canyon, Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Hyundai Santa Cruz. Those are listed from lowest score to highest, with Hyundai’s small pickup ranking fourth behind the Ford models. However, even the Santa Cruz didn’t earn the “recommended” label from CR.
Significant problems with Hyundai’s compact truck include a small bed and poor rear visibility. Automakers include fancy rear windows with big dividers often without considering overall visibility. The most crucial thing inside any car is being able to see. Models lacking in that area almost always receive lower scores from reviewers.
Ford trucks stay on top
It’s nothing new to see Ford trucks leading the way. After all, the best-selling truck for forty-something years has been the Ford F-Series models. The compact truck segment has two excellent options from the American automaker. According to Consumer Reports, only the Honda Ridgeline is better than Ford’s two options. However, Honda’s offering is far more expensive than the two Ford compact trucks.
