To our utter delight, glamour is back! Forgive us if we sound a little over-excited, but we had no idea what to expect from the 2021 Golden Globes style offerings, since most of the nominees would be staying home thanks to Covid. Would it be a casual, pajama-clad affair in the manner of, well… pretty much everything in the last twelve months? Would it be stylish, but restrained so as not to appear too frivolous in these uncertain times?
We’re happy to report it was neither of these things. Perhaps celebrities and their stylists sensed that we all needed a shot of high-octane Hollywood Glam right now or perhaps they all got tired of yoga pants at the same time. Whatever the reason, the stars came out sparkling and ready to shine and we truly loved to see it. These were some of our absolute faves.
Cynthia Erivo in Valentino
In a night full of head-turning looks, Cynthia Erivo may just have outdone them all in this jaw-dropping sci-fi queen ensemble, complete with mega-glam spaceboot action. No one else wore anything like it, which was, we think, the entire point.
Josh O’Connor in Loewe
Don’t ever expect the star of The Crown to come out in conventional, middle-of-the-road menswear. Here, he goes for more of an “intense, 19th Century romantic poet” vibe, which could not possibly suit him better.
Leslie Odom, Jr. in Valentino
The Hamilton and One Night in Miami star earned our never-ending respect for going way off the beaten path with this pink-hued suit and brilliant green turtleneck. Unexpected, unforgettable, and up-to-the-second modern.
Rosamund Pike in Molly Goddard
The star of I Care A Lot took up space (literally) and refused to bow to expectations in this hilarious and statement-making combination of tulle, ruffles, velvet and combat boots. The blunt bob could not have been more perfect for this puddle-stomping, don’t-care-what-you-think look.
Amanda Seyfried in Oscar de la Renta
The Mank star served up pure old-school romanticism in a soft pink gown with a spray of enormous flowers circling the top. With her sleek, soft hair and exquisite diamond earrings and choker, she was the very picture of a movie star.
Emma Corrin in Miu Miu
The stylish star of The Crown accepted her award for her star-making turn as Princess Diana by subtly paying tribute to her love of floppy collars and a strong ‘80s-style shoulder with this rich, eye-catching blend of Pierrot and princess fantasy.
Tiffany Haddish in Alberta Ferretti
The comedian and actress set the tone for the night early by coming out to present in this sleek, beaded metallic gown. The short blonde hair, gold clutch, and hoops all combined to turn this into a bold, strong and sexy look.
Tina Fey in Versace and Amy Poehler in Moschino
The hosts of the night stepped out on opposite coasts in two looks that said they were ready to serve a little sass with their glam. The hostesses coordinated in black tights, with Tina’s sharp tuxedo jacket making a perfect accompaniment to Amy’s sequined minidress; two sharp, strong, sisterhood statement looks.
Angela Bassett in Dolce & Gabbana
A brilliant purple gown with ostrich feather detail wasn’t enough for the fierce and fabulous star of Soul. She had to go and top it off with an absolutely killer braid. The result was the ultimate in statement style.
Satchel Lee and Jackson Lee in Gucci
The Golden Globe ambassadors and children of director Spike Lee collaborated with Gucci on their stylishly unique looks, combining their own sense of expression with high fashion and luxuriousness. They looked like the royalty they are.
Dan Levy in Valentino Couture
Perhaps we’re reading too much into it, but this stunningly vivid, sparkly Valentino ensemble felt like the star of Schitt’s Creek shedding the last of the monochromatic style that defined his award-winning character, David Rose. A look that turns the page and announces he’s ready for what’s next.
Elle Fanning in Gucci
Ditching the ‘18th Century period costumes of The Great, Elle Fanning turned to more modern royalty for inspiration in this sleek, stunning, ice-blue Gucci gown, giving us pure Grace Kelly realness.
Carey Mulligan in Prada
Appearing from her hotel room in London, the star of Promising Young Woman wisely opted for a look that would give as much impact as possible in a Zoom call; a pale pink satin dress with softly beautiful folds and pleats in the bust and shoulder detail, and a sharp, modern ear cuff that draws the eye.
